CHARLESTON — Veteran dog groomers Patty Steidl and Ann Mansfield tend to canine clients at The Groom Room, a new business in Charleston.

Steidl, who has been in the business for 25 years and operated her own shop in the past, said she opened The Groom Room after seeing several other local dog groomers walk away or quit. She said this has made it difficult for dog owners to schedule appointments with overbooked groomers, which can cause health issues for breeds that need regular grooming.

“I decided to reach out and help owners who are struggling to care for their dogs,” Steidl said of her store at 820 Lincoln Ave.

The full-service grooming boutique’s range of services include baths, haircuts, ear cleaning, nail trimming and anal gland expression for most dog breeds. Steidl said their services are particularly in demand for poodles and mixed breeds of poodles. Steidl, who also learned about canine health care needs while working as a veterinary technician, said helping dogs be perfectly groomed and comfortable is her favorite part of the job.

“It’s immediate relief for the dogs,” said Mansfield, who has more than six years of experience as a groomer. After grooming the dogs, she and Steidl take photos of the newly groomed dogs in front of photo backdrops for their owners.

The Groom Room is located in the small strip mall next to Dirty’s Bar & Grill on the south side of Lincoln Avenue / Illinois 16. The dog grooming store is located between the busy Seventh and Ninth Street intersections that give access to the Eastern Illinois University campus. .

“There’s a lot of traffic here,” Steild said, adding that passing motorists stopped to make appointments.

The Groom Room takes appointments from 9 a.m. from Tuesday to Saturday. The store’s closing times each day depend on the number of scheduled appointments. For more information, call the store at 217-254-3704 or visit The Groom Room page on Facebook.
