I would describe my brand, Beauty Skinergy, as very inclusive. I always try to make sure everyone understands the story behind it and why I started; that my acne scars and dark spots were insecure to me and that’s something women don’t like to talk about much. I like to make sure people know that the fundamental part of my brand and its core includes us, women of color.

I worked in real estate for 11 years, and in 2017 I took a trip to the Dominican Republic, where my family is from. In my experience, DR products – from hair to skin – worked much better for me, so I randomly asked one of my cousins ​​if she knew someone or if she could direct me to a beautician or someone who could help me with some issues I was having with my skin. As I shaved so long before I had laser hair removal, I had a lot of ingrown scars and razor bumps as well as dark spots on my face from my pimples. I was in contact with a formulator there who I told about my issues, and she gave me a sample that I brought back to the US with me, but I ended up getting it. use that a few months later.

I started documenting my journey with this cream on Instagram. I posted a lot of before and after and a lot of women who had the same issues were intrigued. My dark spots were a big insecurity for me and I realized that this was something a lot of other women were doing as well, even though they didn’t talk about it much. I started selling it to them – it didn’t have a brand, and I told the formulator to make a few more lots for me so I could sell it. Naturally, because I was in real estate, I’m really good at customer service and sales, so I thought it made sense to brand it and make it an exclusive product.

In 2019, I launched Skinergy Beauty. I started with just the Corrective cream for dark spots, which, to this day, is still my best-selling product.

I’ve always wanted to have that natural Jennifer Lopez glow right where you wake up and your skin just looks bright and even. My forehead was always darker than the rest of my face, but I still felt like my skin was dull. When i was doing the Come Correct Serum, that was something I wanted to target – to have that inner glow. It was so important for me to make sure my skin was hydrated from the inside out. I was so used to trying the 10 to 12 step methods that incorporate all kinds of products like essences, toners, and sheet masks. When I did, my skin got super congested.

At that point, when I was thinking of launching Skinergy, I thought to myself: “It’s not possible that my skin needs so many products. It might work for other people in other countries, but for me, an American woman and a New Yorker, I don’t want to wake up and have to do a 10 step routine just to have glowing, hydrated skin. I thought there had to be a way to do it with minimal product. When I created the Come Correct Serum, I made sure we included ingredients that target many skin care concerns.

With the exception of Jennifer Lopez, who didn’t even launch a beauty brand until recently, I haven’t seen many women who looked like me in beauty. I think it’s important to know that your identity is there so that you can have something to relate to, and it’s important for me to feel represented. Sometimes it’s a little uncomfortable to walk into a field and not feel like you’re being represented, and I feel like it’s important when women like me are leading the way. other people, especially when you don’t come for the money and you don’t. grow up with handouts that other people may receive. I was born in New York and grew up in the Bronx, and my parents didn’t come for money. These kinds of stories need to be spread so that we can inspire the younger ones and help them understand that it’s kinda normal now and it’s okay to chase your dreams.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, knowing the difference between having an idea and executing an idea is so important. A lot of people have great creative ideas but never really realize them. There are so many obstacles, but these should never stop you from wanting to continue. Nothing in life is easy, and you learn as much as you go. In order for you to be able to bring your idea to fruition, you have to learn how to execute it and understand that it takes so long to get there.
