Plus, it’s a great activity she can do with her new husband and kids. “The average American walks 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day, or about 1.5 to 2 miles. It’s a good idea to know how many steps per day you walk now, as your own benchmark. Then you can hit the 10,000 step goal by aiming to add an additional 1,000 steps per day every two weeks,” says the Mayo Clinic. “If you’re already walking more than 10,000 steps a day, or you’re fairly active and trying to lose weight, you’ll probably want to increase your daily step goal.”

Portion control is essential. “My cheat food is ice cream, but I found these tiny, snack-sized cones that Haagen-Dazs came out with.”

I have lots of small meals, which is best for me,” she says. “I found that eating three large meals made me feel too full and felt tired, especially after lunch. I eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, egg whites, oatmeal, a little chicken, eggs, rice – that’s mostly my diet.”
