The Washington football team are entering their third week of training before Thursday’s opening game against the New England Patriots. One of Washington’s biggest free agents, wide receiver Curtis Samuel, hasn’t trained since training camp began three weeks ago.

Samuel was embarrassed by a groin injury that appeared during the OTAs in late May. The injury also forced him to miss the mandatory mini-camp. So Washington put him on the PUP list. He was also on the reserved / COVID-19 list, which further complicates matters for him.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera provided an update on Samuel after Sunday practice. Rivera said there was “no timetable” for Samuel’s return. But, he doesn’t seem too worried.

“There is no timeline for Curtis,” Rivera said by Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala. “He’s been in the system. He knows it. Yes, you’d like him to catch a few reps maybe in the last preseason game, but we’re not going to rush him there.

Based on Rivera’s wording, Washington is aiming for the third and final game of the season for Samuel in order to prepare for the game before the regular season. This should be of concern for a free agent who should be the second wide receiver option.

“But we’re going to bring him back in because, again, he knows the system,” Rivera added. “He’s going to take it back very, very quickly and it’s really going to be about building a relationship with the quarterbacks. ”

Samuel knows the Washington system well. He spent the first three seasons of his NFL career playing for Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner with the Carolina Panthers.

Samuel’s familiarity will allow Washington to help him get back to the field whenever he is cleared from COVID-19 protocols and activated from the PUP list.

The fact that Washington is considering the last preseason game to put it on the field plasticizes thoughts of this groin injury being a hindrance even at the start of the regular season.
