Salem: District Collector S Karmegam imposed restrictions on bathing on the banks of the cauvery as part of the Aadi Perukku festival celebrations on Wednesday. He also advised people to bathe only in places indicated by the authorities.
The move comes after a huge flow of water in the river. Karnataka has released over a lakh cusecs of KRS water and Kabini dams on Tuesday.
The water will reach the Mettur dam on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, people living downstream of the dam were alerted to the flooding as public works department officials decided to divert the entire influx through 16 vents.
Karmegam said officials deployed at various locations will guide people coming to the river to stipulated areas.
Similarly, collectors from Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Erode districts reviewed the arrangements made for the festival in each district.
All district collectors have instructed police, fire and rescue service personnel and tax officials to keep watch on the river banks around the clock.
Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Salem Division will operate special buses to various destinations including Kodumudi, Bhavani, Mohanur, Paramathi VelvetMettur and Edappadi.
