Braun MGK7220 all-in-one trimmer – beard styling has never looked so good (review)

The Braun MGK7220 all-in-one trimmer is a 10-in-1 styling kit based on the Braun Wet and Dry 5544 rechargeable multipurpose handle.

Sorry for the messy intro, but this device slices, dices, trims, shaves, cuts with five gripper heads, four combs (including one adjustable from 3-21mm) and throws in a Gillette Fusion 5 ProGlide razor blade for a close shave.

And this is both its strength and its weakness. Let me explain why.

When I was a child, we lived on land. The area around the house was well-kept grass, the larger area was barely “tamed” with native grass and weeds, and the wild jungle was in the back enclosure by the stream. Dad had three mowers. A very formidable gasoline powered mower / sickle (for the “wild” bush), a Cox Mowmobile forwarder (for the big one) and a Victa lawn mower (for the lawn). He explained, “Son, you need the right tool for the job”.

Well, I’ve been using the Braun MGK7220 All-in-One Trimmer for about a month on a reasonably high-growing COVID-CONVICT beard, and while I can highly recommend it, my dad’s words come back to haunt me. Can one tool do it all?

Let’s look at the bits first

The Type 5544 rechargeable handle powers a swing shaft that drives the clip-on clips. It reads your beard 13 times per second and adjusts the motor power to its thickness (resistance). In other words, all you need is an on / off switch. It has a 12V / .4A / 4.8W charger and a charger base for a runtime of 100 minutes and a charge of 60 minutes.

  • Main Mower – Cutting metal is a lifetime 30mm sharp mower blade. This is for all comb accessories.
  • Body trimmer head has 35mm center shaving foil and motorized trimmers on each side
  • Detailed trimmer head is a 15m wide mower
  • The Mini-Fil shaving head is a 15mm wide shaving foil
  • The trimmer head for the ears and nose is a rotary hair trimmer

Combs include

  • Adjustable bear comb sliding from 3 to 11 mm in steps of 2 mm
  • Sliding shoe adjustable from 13 to 21 mm in steps of 2 mm
  • Fixed comb 1mm
  • Fixed comb 2mm

All items are available in spare parts, that’s why you buy Braun rather than any generic trimmer.

How it works?

Some first observations.

First of all, I doubt you will ever use all the heads or all the combs. Most bearded people like to keep the same style. Our review model was an all-in-one face, hair and body trimmer with the addition of high tech and wet / dry use. There is a handy comparison of beard and all-in-one trimmers here.

Second, given the relatively narrow width of the trimmer (30mm), this is more of a precision device (Victa lawn mower) than, say, the Remington Rapid Cut Turbo hair clipper with 70mm blades. mm (Mowmobile). In fact, to better classify it, it sits between a whip snipper and a lightweight electric mower.

Third, with so many trim and length options, it’s easy to make the wrong choice and remove too much or too little beard hair. While the 4.5mm setting on the Remington works well for me, the 3mm setting produces an almost naked face and the 5mm setting isn’t quite what I want either. So I won’t be using it for haircuts.

On the extremely positive side, the Braun MGK7220 all-in-one trimmer is a precision device.

It is very good at

The 30mm trimmer with comb cuts beautifully with very little stray hairs escaping. It is perfect for cutting the beard and lower neck (electric trimmer). Use the combless trimmer to shave bald heads!

I don’t do designer thatch, but the 1 and 2mm combs are great for this.

The 15mm and mini-foil trimmer heads are perfect for trimming the edges around the ears, under the nose and lips (whip trimmer).

The ear / nose trimmer is so good I wonder why I didn’t buy it about ten years ago.

The body trimmer is excellent. The cutting blades cut quite tightly and the leaf is suitable for stubble cultivation. If you have never removed the excess body hair from your body before, it might look quite strange / prickly when wearing a shirt, but the feeling goes away quickly. Damn – he doesn’t have a shaving handle for his back!

Quick wash under the tap. I noticed some “grease” on the motor spindle which is the consistency of petroleum jelly so be sure to lubricate it.

GadgetGuy’s point of view

Being relatively new to this beard thing (I grew it to protest the lockdowns of COVID convicts in March 2020), I was content to mowmobile the 10mm per month beard growth and trim it with a electric razor trimmer if necessary. But it was never “clean”.

I’ve used it twice, a month apart, and other than the 3-5mm (beard length) decision, it produces a cut you can be proud of. My wife doesn’t even back down now when the usually thorny bearded and mustached man seeks a kiss.

You might notice that I didn’t mention the Gillette Fusion 5 ProGlide razor blade. Blade razors have little technology, and regardless of their disposable five-blade design and comfort bands, most men own one or three razors. I actually use the Gillette Labs heated razor for a hot shave – it’s great other than its $ 10 blades.

We reviewed the Braun S3 beard and razor combo and gave it 8.8 / 10. Rather, it is a precision instrument, and as such, it does most things but not all well. As a men’s beard and hair trimmer, it is perfect.
