little louie england
« on: March 09, 2010, 04:22:26 PM »
thought you would like an update on our little bichon chap. i have to sy i am a bit worried about mr louie, we noticed when he came in he wasnt quite right but nothing was obvious straight of so he has been given a couple of weeks to settle down anf for someone to live with him for a bit to try and work it out this is the email i got today from his foster mum

I have never had such a sad looking dog before! He is very docile and inactive and takes no interest in things around him. He has learnt to climb the stairs now and will follow me around everywhere so he is getting some exercise. He reluctantly goes for walks and is very slow. He walks about three feet behind me. He is fine of the lead but still walks three feet behind me! We can go for a long walk and he will not always go to the toilet until we get back. He does not urinate very much and sometimes seems to have difficulty going. He uses the dog flap ok. Still a few toileting issues.

I have found a soft lump on his shoulder and he is constipated and drinks very little. I have stopped putting dry mixer in with his food and started to give him cod liver oil which seems to be helping. He also limps quite often when out walking. I need to get his joints checked out incase there is a problem. He sleeps a lot and likes to be groomed. His skin condition is getting better but I think he will always need to have regular shampoos with the Malasub to keep it at bay. His fur is growing back nicely but this does make it difficult to see his skin properly.

At the moment I have my Mothers [bad language is not allowed]zu staying and they get on ok but he does not interact with her just follows her around. Unfortunately she is a bit hyperactive and is not good at being left for any length of time and is leading Louis astray with some disruptive behavior.

I will book him in for his second vaccination and a check over by the vets next week.

He will need to go to someone who has another older dog and who doesn't mind walking very slowly. Perhaps he is older than we think or he is in some discomfort. Will let you know what the vet says.
poor louie i do hope we can find out what is wrong, someone did suggest cushings when he first came in as he was so overweight , drank a lot and his skin was a bit iffy, but i dont know. here are some pics of him the first one when he first came in the other 2 were taken today. does anyone have any thoughts what could be wrong.

Tracey poor wee Louie England.  Cushings normally would have him drinking a lot and not being in control of his urine. Normally too a dog with cushings will be looking for food a lot even if just fed and their hair falls out.  Limping on the back legs is also a symptom.  Depending on the type of Cushings it can be controlled with meds.  The other sort sadly is a tumour at the base of the brain/skull.
He sounds very similar to the symptoms Tobi was showing before we got him sorted out he had prolapsed discs in his neck and was causing pain obviously and well as partial paralysis to his right hand side.  Do you know if he has been knuckling?
Tobi has always been a lagger behind on walks and of course some of this was due to his prolapsed discs.  Even now 6 weeks on he is still a bit slow but not nearly as bab as he was.  Tobi was said to be 5yrso 2 years ago but I would add a couple of years onto this with hindsight.
Anyway I wish wee LE lots and lots of love wish I could have him here with me and the Boyzsies, Bichons do love being with other Bichons please give him gentle huggers for me. :bighuh: :bighuh: :bighuh: :bighuh:

Cushings is the direct opposite to Addison's Disease and I believe both are quite rare.  Our Belle was diagnosed with Addison's Disease November last year and I searched the internet for info.  I've just googled and came across this site.....

http://dogs.about.com/cs/disableddogs/p/cushingsdisease.htm

Quote: One of the most common, and often the only visible symptom of Cushing's Disease is a drastic increase in thirst, which causes excessive water intake. Please remember though, this is ONE symptom, and it is not even a symptom of Cushing's exclusively! This is also a symptom of Addison's disease, which is the direct opposite of Cushing's Disease. Unquote.

I know you're saying Louie doesn't drink much now so most likely won't be Addison's but just thought I'd bring this to your attention.  Belle's skin and coat didn't look right either.

Really hope you get a diagnosis and little Louie gets better soon, bless him

Hi TMB Sadly Bichons do have a  disposition to Cushings so perhaps that would be a good starting point for the wee man all I wish is that he is happy and I think that is a given when you know where he came from.  Be well wee boy, please

Thanks Tracey, Bichons really are drawn to other Bichons in a way I have not experienced with other breeds I have owned, so glad he has found a wee friend.

What a relief so happy to learn he is going to be fine Tracey.  The muscle thing is a fact as Tobi and Cookie had no muscle on their back legs - now they are wee strong boys.  I pray he will find his forever home very soon. :bighuh:

What good new Tracey I'm sure with regular exercise it won't be long before he gets some muscle   :bighuh:
The question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But rather, can they suffer?
